Iron Stars - Tunnel clearing

Kror was able to discover the location of a few subway entryways back from when this city was inhabited by people and not the twisted things the terminals represent now. The termies have turned this underground network of tunnels into something of a second city. Gas has not penetrated this deep underground and dark tunnel fights at close range have begin slowing down the IA advance. Low light goggles clash with bio-augmentation and mutation. Swords and gun bayonets lock against taloned hand or crab claw. Both sides work frantically to hold as many tunnels as possible, refusing to give ground. IA commanders have grown cautious, and are sending in specialists to collapse some tunnels and refocus advances down the largest ones.

"Looking at the notes Kror gave us, we're going to need to seal off these tunnels to cut off exits, trap groups of Termies, and also prevent any Terminals from attacking our people from the flanks. Given the darkness of these tunnels, I'd expect the Termies inhabiting them to have mutations suited to the darkness either by enhanced night vision, hearing, or sensitivity to vibrations. Jasper, Ana; I think we should either go a bit ahead of a sapping team to help clear out areas and protect them while demolition charges are set, or we bring along charges with us. We'll need to map the tunnels as we go. Ana, will your new drones be able to help with that? I won't be as much help is close quarters combat as Goblin would be, but I think we can manage."

"Atzou can help us for the frontline but I don't want to risk her life. I have a medical drone and a not-medical drone with a Heavy Cutter installed." Ana respond. "Not my idea, Atzou forced me to have heavy weaponry on it for 'suppressive fire'." "None of them are silent, I have another one more silent in standby at the camp but it would take time to make it come and I can't control 3 drones at the same time. The medical drone have an observation suite, I could maybe use it for scouting and map the tunnels."

(There’s not time to wait for any new big pieces of gear like that. We have to work with what we got)

“I think your second idea is our best course of action. We would bring the charges with us, then any that try to escape to the main tunnels can be overwhelmed by our soldiers. The group is just around the corner and down this tunnel if my coordinates are right, we can grab the explosives there. “ Jasper says with his new Breach Rifle hung over his shoulder. “Hey Dalibor, I’ve never really fired a rifle before, mostly handguns, any tips?”

Pulling his MagRifle forward from the sling, "Honestly, our rifles won't be as useful in tight quarters of these tunnels, but there is a stance that allows more maneuverability at close range, Instead of having the butt of the stock at your shoulder, you're going to pull it down alongside your hip like this. Make sure you have your other hand gripped under the barrel and try to keep the rifle locked in that position. You'll shift your aim by turning your hips likes this. Shooting 'from the hip' like this isn't very accurate at long range, but plenty accurate for close range as long as the rifle points the same direction as how your hips face."

“Huh, interesting, thank you. I wasn’t aware I was holding it incorrectly, a little embarrassing honestly, but I also have my laser pistol and my stun baton too, so hopefully I’ll be covered. “ Hearing Ana stop and her panicked words Jasper pulls around his messenger bag and opens it “Ana, here, I have extras, I need them for my suit, but a charge should last me 36 hours, and I’m only…. Two hours in, I’m not worried. “ Jasper will reach into his bag, unbundle his three B cells and gives Ana one. “You can keep it, they are rechargeable” Jasper says with a smile. “Okay, when your ready let’s go meet with the group and get the explosives.”

"Thank you ! My drone will be more effective in the long term now. I will pay or give it back to you at the end of the mission." Ana activate her medical drone 'Proto Stars' to use it to scrout. "Ready when you are"

Doing a final check of his rifle's magazine and patting the knife at his hip, Dalibor nods to both of them before concentrating on the arcane energy flows around them. "If you would, let me see each of your firearms so that I might help them shoot straight, even if only a little bit. It won't be active now, but I want to prepare myself for if it's needed." Each of you is given a demolition charge. Most soldiers aside from medics and heavy weapons teams are carrying them, and you can see many are ensuring they have knives and other home made weapons closer at hand than normal. One soldier gives a trench club clearly made from scrap a few practice swings. A steady stream of wounded men have been ferried out of the tunnels for at least an hour now. Many of those are dead men walking already given the severity and the time it’s taking to evacuate them. Field hospitals are already becoming overwhelmed. Nearby a sapper team of four engineers is getting ready to make their way down to the tunnels using the nearby subway entrance kror found, now in the middle of an armed inheritor alliance position

Ana take the demolition charge and she make a mental note to maybe also have a blunt weapon if she need to defend herself. (Edit : Pressed enter by mistake before finishing my post) She immediately move to the wounded soldiers to help them stabilize until they can have a proper treatment. Ana will help herself and use her medical drone to multitask. (edited)

Jasper takes a moment to look over the explosive. He never thought the strings of fate would bring him to where he was now. He is reminded back just eight months ago when he left his home and the safety of Dremlas’s walls for the first time since the scream, when he went on the expedition to the frontier village now Eastern Dremlas. He remembers injured and dead soldiers being regularly driven out of town or carted out in body bags. He remembers the late nights when everyone in the town would gather around a large fire to eat the little food we had and drink all the whiskey we could, the gruesome stories he remembers hearing from the soldiers from their day securing the frontier. Jasper had grown accustomed to this life, the dangers of the frontier and here in the Terminal city they were in the heart of the frontier. Jasper snaps out of it and gives a nod, an Inheritor salute, and a “Thank you for your service” to each wounded soldier and medic who passes by before he turns to the larger crowd. “Ahem.. Inheritors we have made tremendous progress, we can do this. By now I’m sure everyone is informed with the plan, but I will give a brief overview. We split up into the smaller tunnels, set the charges, trap them inside, any survivors that they to escape will find themselves in the main tunnel where the rest of us will be waiting ready. It looks like everyone is geared up and ready to begin. Today is begins a new chapter of our world, we can reclaim the rest of the frontier. For the grand alliance!” Jasper says trying boost the overall morale of the group.

The signs are illegible now, partially overgrown and partially defaced by the termies who lived here so you cannot see what the streets here used to be called. You can hear the sounds of fighting and shrieks of dying termies and wounded men drifting up from other parts of the underground.

“Ugh, what a horrendous sound.” Jasper says as they head down the main tunnel before looking around trying to listen to sounds of Terminals nearby or trying to notice signs that would hint that they might have been through any of the smaller offshoot tunnels.

One of the sappers deploys a glow lamp- a simple drone that is little more than a bright fist sized lightbulb. A few commands has it following your group, floating just above you so as to not backlight you to whover might be creeping around in the darkness of the old subway station. The platform looks to have been secured as some kind of beachhead. The old train has been backed into one of the tunnels and a fortified position has been set up as a bulkwark to keep Termies from flooding this way back toward the surface and into the center of the IA forward camp.

"So we need to close as much tunnels that goes to the platform if I understand correctly. Do we have a map of the tunnels to know which one need to be shut down? "

This city was settled Pre-Scream and in the resulting twin disasters of The Scream and the flood of null breach, those electronic records and physical blueprints have been lost.

“Damn, no looks like we’re going in blind, we can try to chart our path try to make a makeshift map”

One of the sappers also is carrying a navcomp. It will fill in the route you']ve taken as you walk and will prevent you from getting entirely lost.

"Alright, it looks like our only way right now is forward. I think that all of the teams should head out together, and then branch off as we come to new tunnels to find spots where demolition charges will cause the greatest structural damage to block off the tunnel. Once the tunnel is collapsed, those groups return to the central tunnel here to resupply and keep working our way forward. We might want to leave every third of fourth tunnel alone just so we still have routes to finish clearing them out and as known paths for them to escape. I don't like the idea of just trapping them all to starve to death. A bullet is much more humane in these circumstances."

“That sounds like a good plan to me, are you guys ready to head down?”

Patting his rifle, "I'm ready."

"I'm also ready" Ana say.

As everyone begins checking in that they're ready to go the sappers finish hefting the last of their gear. You'll need to pass through the wreck of the former subway train to get into the tunnels proper- as its been backed into the tunnel as some kind of containment or funnel for any termies trying to find their way out.

Jasper will begin to look for any entries into the train

Ana will use the Observation Suite of her drone to keep an eye of their surrounding to avoid ambushes.

The back of the train can be climbed up using a short three step ladder, and it can be walked through down to the other side with ease. You see a small IA position has been set up on the other side, and can hear the chatter of its machine gun as it sends a brief burst down the tunnel, and a few termies shriek as they are hit.

The darkness beyond this position is absolute.

As the imitate gun fire ends and the sounds of terminal anguish quiets jasper will wave to the soldiers before climbing out the other side of the train back into the tunnels and approaching the position. “Looks like the plan is working so far, we’re going in next, wish us luck”

'You'll need it" one of the gunners calls out as you move past their position into the dark tunnels. You can see thirty bodies here, Termies coming too close to the gun nest and were cut down. A few are slowly trying to crawl away. The tunnel branch gently curves left along with its rails.

Jasper looks back to his party with a look of pity before pulling out his laser pistol and shooting the crawling Termies in the head, before continuing down the tunnel (Execution right? They’d be helpless and wouldn’t require a roll if I am correct)

Ana turn her head at the execution, she know it was a mercy killing but still find it difficult. "Atzou, get ready to activate the other drone if we need to fight." (We are on the main tunnel ?)

You can hear the sounds of more terminals around the gentle bend. it sounds like a small pack but the sound reverberates strangely down here in this world of cement and darkness

Jasper looks back and nods before going around the bend Laser pistol out and ready for anything (If we are rolling initiative, Jasper would go first due to Alert 2)

Atzou activate the Shooting Star drone and prepare herself to shoot with her rifle. Ana move back her medic drone, she then move to cover and get ready to shoot with her pistol and drone.

(Yeah let’s get initiative and we will just keep it for the mission so we don’t have to roll every time)

The tunnel curves and you can see a very small rail maintenance car , essentially a pick up truck with adaptions to travel on rail has been flipped over, and five terminals come out from around it, 20m away.

Jasper almost knowing where the group would be takes aim with his laser pistol and shoots at the middle most terminal (15/5)

The shot wounds the termie. It screeches and it’s claws seem to go slack for a moment before it regains its balance and hunches down, ready to charge.

Ana take control of shooting star, she never used it outside of the training field and is afraid of the result. They don't have many space to move so the weapon will be most effective. Ana sight and start to rotate the Heavy cutter and supress the termies on the tunnel. (2 ammunition used. Roll for damage : 8 /2 = 4) She then take aim with her own pistol and shoot to the closer terminal. (6/8)

The two shots miss as the Termies move quickly and get under your field of fire.

Stumbling back from the sudden onslaught of the rushing Termies, Dalibor drops his rifle, letting it hang by the sling and quickly draws his monoblade to stab at the nearest attacker. His panicked stab lacks precision and force, though. (5/2. 2 shock AC ≤ 15).

The Termie squad crashes into the melee and swings wildly. Claws and jaws and various combat adaptions lash at you in a storm of biological hatred. (21/3 on Jasper , and 15/3 and 15/1 on the shear drone. All others miss and your ac is too high for shock)

As the terminals rush the group Jasper stands firm as he takes the hit before pulling out his stun baton and flicking it open. Small crackles of electricity can be seen as Jasper swings on the one that hit him. (12/7, 3)

(Sorry for the delay. Question regarding the previous termie attack, they took their turn sooner in round 2 or is the free melee as we are locked in melee ?) Ana received feedback of the damage of the drone and is not confident to stay next to the termies. She disengage her drone and herself to try to turn the fight in their favour. (edited)

(They took a -4 to hit to make snap attacks so they could go earlier in the round. That’s why almost everyone missed. , but they’re in melee with you now so if you plan to leave the melee and don’t use your main to take fighting withdrawal , they get an opportunity attack)

Dalibor sees his situation and decides to make a tactical retreat (fighting withdrawl) and moves past Jasper to give himself room to shoot. (movement)

Now out of the melee, Ana send her drone to assist Atzou and use her own pistol to shoot termie closest to her.

A Termies falls by the drone fire, but your pistol goes wide. Panicking with half the pack now dead, the terminals begin to flee. (Fighting withdrawal to not trigger AoO, moving 10m)

Seeing Jasper and one of the drones start taking down a couple of the Termies, Dalibor moves to take Jasper out of his line of fire before raising his Magrifle. As his finger gently squeezes the trigger, Dalibor invokes one of his runes to tighten its trajectory (Meta-dimensional Accuracy. Can't access Roll20 tonight if you could roll for me Neko)

The shot hits, splatting the terminal and sending them sprawling to the floor of the tunnel. (Atzou)

Atzou join Dalibor and start to shoot with her Mag rifle to the fleeing termies.

This small combat pack has been dealt with and for now the sounds of fighting should keep the others from trying to storm the Inheritor position behind you

As the last of the Termies fall jasper let’s out a sigh and says “Well, shall we continue forward and find somewhere to place this explosive?”

"Isolating them is definitely at the top of my to do list."

"They where to close for my liking... Is someone hurt ? " Ana say still trembling from killing for the first time. Atzou search the body's of the termies to find a melee weapon for Ana.

The termies had natural weapons in the form of claws or hooked knuckles on their hands, or sharp teeth. None of them have anything you could easily remove or fashion into a weapon

“No, I’m fine. Here” jasper pulls out his mono blade knife and hands it to Ana. “You might need this, trust me, it gets a bit easier.”

"Thanks ! I would like to not use it but our encounter showed us that it will not be possible to always stay out of range. " Ana check the damage of her drone and try see it could be repaired. "I need to be careful with it. I don't think it would survive other attacks like this."

“Let me see if there is any quick repairs I can help out with.” (Fix? Maybe Int?

(I don't think there is anything we can do for heavy machinery like this in the field, we'd need a workshop)

The tunnel ahead branches into two distinct routes. One goes east, down a relatively straight tunnel where the electrical lights have entirely failed. It's a large gallery and bringing it down might choke off any number of arterial tunnels. The other goes west. SHINING TIME STATION is written on a fading placard at the top of the tunnel, where engineers would be able to see it and switch the track from their cab if they were headed in that direction.

At this time, there are no Inheritor troops on the surface or the tunnels at that station.

(How many explosives do we have? Like would be be able to blow in multiple tunnels or should we focus on one big one)

(If anyone here has fix-1, we can make them shaped charges to most of the blast goes in one direction and its not a 40 meter radius, which would probably help if we're trying to crack supports and whatnot) (edited)

( Awesome, Ya boy has Fix-1) Jasper will look back at the others before pulling out his explosive. “Let’s head towards the station, but let’s blow this tunnel first. “ he looks to the engineers “can one of you help me, I think I understand, but could use some help.” He says before heading down the tunnel looking for a good spot

One of the engineers is happy to assist. A shaped charge is perfect for the type of work you are going to be doing- though a two meter radius in all directions is an advisable stand clear zone, when not standing in front of the blasting face. (so its a 40m cone one way, but a 2m radius in all directions too)

Heading deeper into the tunnel Jasper will look around for a good spot that shows any signs of structural integrity like pillars or beams or anything like that Once he finds a good spot jasper will place the shaped charge in one of the corners where the floor meets the wall angled diagonally and up at the ceiling. Jasper will then retreat the 2.5 meter radius back towards his party before detonating (Or if I have to detonate it there I’ll do it and run back)

The charge is set and as everyone begins to advance down the station tunnel both yours and a charge belonging to the engineer pop with a massive bang. Debris and dust falls from the roof as thousands of howling Termies are trapped in this underground tomb to slowly starve or suffocate

"AH! I was not expecting it to be that loud! I wonder if the sound is going to bring more Termies to investigate. Let's try to keep an eye out and now get jumped quite as suddenly next time."

Despite never being the religious type, Jasper finds himself offering a prayer for the souls of the Termies. The comms of Jasper’s suit can be heard to click on before he says “Yeah, I agree. Let’s keep moving and keep our eyes out.”

Moving town the tunnel to the Shining Time Station you can see terminal graffiti on the walls, and messages left behind by people seeking shelter down here during the initial null breach. THE ONLY CURE IS A BULLET reads one, another says ALL IS LOST! still others lament that God, or the Gods, or some other deity has sought to punish man and the galaxy at large for the horrors unfolding before their eyes. Another broken train is ahead. Its engne door is open and it has been ripped off its tracks, forcing you to enter and move through it to continue. .

"I don't like the look of that ominous door. I think we should toss in some sort of bright flare or other source of light inside the opening before we go in. I didn't bring any flares, but it's something I might need to stat thinking about."

“What a horrible place to be trapped during the scream.” Jasper says reading the walls He turns to Dalibor. “We have the floater lamp, we can use that, just watch my back” jasper walks over to the small drone and sets the command to follow behind him before he heads towards the door hoping to get a better view.

Moving to the side to maintain as minimally obstructive view as possible, Dalibor maintains his low ready position in case he needs to fire quickly. "If there are Termies, please try to move out of my line of fire so that I don't have to worry as much about hitting you."

The interior of the engine and what little you can see of the train beyond has been trashed. Scraps of metal, torn seats, and pieces of the once mighty technological marvel are scattered everywhere

You don’t see any bodies or live terminals

“Well I’ll lead the way” jasper says looking back to his group before walking into the train.

"Do you think it we would be able to reconstruct all this ? I still can't believe it was not so long ago." Ana continue to follow the team and get herself ready by reloading her pistol.

“Yeah, I believe we can.” Jasper says with hope clear in his voice. “We always have, always will.”

There is a dull scraping on the other side of the train. The jackknifed cars wind and twist out of sight so you cannot see the other end, but shadows are gently moving there, thrown into relief by the floater lamp. Dali can make out four distinct shadows, and they're much larger and more swollen than the last termies you dispatched.

Jasper points his laser pistol into the shifting silhouettes and says “come on, show yourselves” despite having a feeling that what ever is in the shadows does not want to talk.

Something that looks like a rock is thrown into the train-car. It rolled into the light of the floater lamp ahead of you and as your eyes focus you can see it is not a rock, but instead is an Inheritor Alliance Army helmet. The head is still inside of it, the soldier's face frozen in the scream he had been crying when it was torn from his body.

Ana let escape a little scream at the head rolling in the train. Atzou put a hand on her shoulder to let her know that she can't lose composure . Ana move her attack drone to have the best shoot position and use the support drone camera to identify what is coming.

“Oh Fuck…” Jasper will shoot at the shadows in response, as he was already nervous (13/4) (probably time for initiative?)

"Call to all Inheritors. We are going to blow a full building in a few moment at the following position. You are advised to stay clear from this zone or find a really good shelter. Be ready for the big explosion!"

After that Atzou see that they keep advancing even after a wound so serious. She try to aim for head with her rifle. Juste before she shoot she ask. "Should we try to use explosives against them ?" (Did you use the effort for the aim assistance magic Dalibor ?)

The terminal shrugs off the blow, the damage is superficial and he roars in annoyance more than pain (Ana)

Ana take aim again and try to shoot the one in melee with Jasper. (13/9)

The shot sizzles off the armored hide of the bulky terminal;. It roars but remains fighting. (Dali)

Seeing Ana's shot deflect from the tough hide, Dalibor quickly mutters under his breath, "Aetheral winds guide our aim" (Guided Fire, everyone w/in 10 meters gets +1 to hit for 2 rounds) Acquiring another target, Dalibor once again concentrates before firing again (18/19 if I can add in the Guided fire to my shot) "Ana, when we get back to Dremlas, I think we should all stop by my family's range for some target practice." The second of the terminals falls, shot through by the enhanced bullet. It groans, and the remaining two lumber forward knee deep in the corpses of their friends. A battering blow slams into Jasper, (22/10) knocking him a step backwards as the spear is pushed to a poor angle
